Deuteronomy 1:9-18

Today's Passage: Deuteronomy 1:9-18
As Moses continues his introduction into the 2nd telling of the law, he looks back to Exodus 18 where his father-in-law Jethro sees the toll that leadership is taking on Moses and wisely encourages him to build a structure that multiplies Moses’ leadership through other capable, wise leaders.
Here are some leadership principles to think about as you read:
1. A plurality of leaders is a part of God’s good design.
As anointed by God and as close to God as Moses was, it is helpful to remember that he was NOT God.
He was a sinner.
He was not all powerful.
He had his own limitations.
Having multiple leaders reminds us that we are not God, and it helps us lead and shepherd the people of God in a more effective way toward Christlikeness.
2. There are expectations for leadership.
Moses had expectations for leaders. He didn’t just take men who were interested, he took men who were capable, both in character and in capacity.
3. Leadership is about God, not yourself.
Our leadership is meant to point people to God and execute his ideas and his plans as revealed in His Word. Christian leadership, therefore, should be rooted in God and His Word, and done for his glory.

13 Choose for your tribes wise, understanding, and experienced men, and I will appoint them as your heads.
3. Leadership is about God, not yourself.
6 And I charged your judges at that time, ‘Hear the cases between your brothers, and judge righteously between a man and his brother or the alien who is with him. 17 You shall not be partial in judgment. You shall hear the small and the great alike. You shall not be intimidated by anyone, for the judgment is God's.
Our leadership is meant to point people to God and execute his ideas and his plans as revealed in His Word. Christian leadership, therefore, should be rooted in God and His Word, and done for his glory.
