Deuteronomy 1: 1-8
Today’s Passage: Deuteronomy 1:1-8
Welcome to Deuteronomy Jumpstart Readers! Excited to walk through this book with you and take another step toward being true disciples of Jesus together. Deuteronomy is a rich book.
Deuteronomy and Joshua go hand in hand. In the first 8 verses we read today we see the start to the fulfillment of the promised land. A promise that is ultimately filled through Joshua’s leadership in the book of Joshua.
The Israelites have been worshiping at Horeb (Mt. Sinai) for a long time. They were receiving God’s Word & Law. They were being taught by God about what it means to know Him, worship Him, and follow Him. And now they have been ordered by God to set out and go and take possession of the land that God promised to “Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.” (v.8)
But that was so long ago... Why did God wait so long to even start the fulfillment of the promise? A few things to think about today:
1) They needed to know who their God was.
2) They needed to know who they were.
3) They needed to know what it looks like to honor God in all things.
Knowing that wars, dangers, and difficult circumstances lay before them (the inhabitants of the land weren’t just going to give it to them), they might have just wanted to stay where they are but God COMMANDED them to go & God ENCOURAGED them to go. He told them that he had already “set the land before you.” They just needed to believe that that was true.
God does not work on our time. He works on His. In this case, hundreds of years later was the perfect time to initiate the fulfillment of the promise. Sometimes God pushes us out of the comfort zone to realize all He has for us and has called us to.
They are about to go on a wild ride to see the promised land but God promised to be there with them every step of the way.
