1 Peter 1:13-25

Today's Passage: 1 Peter 1:13–25

What if the Lord Jesus Christ told you that you would die because of your faith in him? Not only that, but that your death would be preceded by torture and great suffering—all because of your faith. In John 21:18–19, that’s what Jesus told Peter—the way Peter would faithfully trade his life in obedience to Christ.

Consider the weight of our passage today with that impending suffering as a backdrop. Peter must have already wrestled through these things and determined in his heart that purity and obedience to Christ means much more than the price he would pay. It’s in this context that Peter writes, “preparing your minds for action…” What action? Answer, the suffering caused by obedience.

As members of God’s family, we have an obligation to the family business and to the family reputation. This is what and how we’re called to act in the world as followers of Jesus. The business is to see people brought into the family. However, our reputation brings resentment and hostility from a lost and dying world. We’re not to be conformed to our passions, but to holiness honoring the sacrifice and character of Christ.

One way we do this is to live out verse 22 in light of verse 25. That is, we live in obedience to the truth with the result that our souls are purified through it. That truth is the enduring, eternal word, the good news that was preached to you. On this basis, having experienced the love of the Father through obedience to Christ, we can then share a sincere brotherly love, from which we love one another earnestly from a pure heart.

Our passage today reminds us of the hope we have in the Gospel. God calls us to holiness but has provided the means for holiness in Jesus and the living and enduring Word. I don’t know how your 2024 is going with all the goals and aspirations you set at the beginning of the year, but I’m reminded that there is no bill God calls us to pay that he hasn’t already made the deposit for in our account. He calls us to holiness, but he’s made it possible for us to be holy. He calls us to love one another, but he’s made it possible for us to love unselfishly. And even if he calls us to suffer, it will be endured through the strength and hope we have in Christ as we share in his sufferings.
