1 Peter 1:3-7

Today's Passage: 1 Peter 1:3-7

Why do the words “living hope” matter in this text? We sing about Jesus being our living hope and often use that language when speaking about our faith, but do we truly grasp the richness of that description? This kind of hope gives us peace and joy through every circumstance.

We all put our faith and trust in something until it fails us. Think about the chair you’re sitting in. You have full hope that it will hold you up - but what if it failed? What if it broke and you fell to the floor, would you continue to trust that chair? I hope not. You would most likely go out and find another chair that wouldn’t bend and break. With the chair, all it cost you was a little money and embarrassment, but what if life failed you? What if today was your last day… What hope do you have that can stand up to death?

The hope found in Christ is living because he is living even though he was slain. Jesus faced the worst possible outcome in life. Life had failed him. He stopped breathing and was placed in a tomb for three days until he rose and defeated death! That’s why we have a “living hope.” Our greatest enemy, death, has no power over him because he is the God of Life!

So why does that matter for you and me? Because there is not much in this life that won’t fail us at some point. Money, friends, family, and life itself. But our hope is in Christ. The one who conquered death and grave. The one who rose to life. The one who now reigns in Heaven. He is our living hope because he is alive. So whatever may come our way - trials, suffering, happiness, or death, we know that our lives rest secure in the hands of our resurrected Lord.
