2 Corinthians 1:1-11

Today’s Passage: 2 Corinthians 1:1-11

Hey CPC! I am excited to go through the book of 2 Corinthians with you this next little bit. Thanks for joining us for Jumpstart. Stop and pray right now as we dive into this book that God would use it to form us into His image and take us another step closer to becoming a true disciple of Jesus Christ.

The book of 2 Corinthians is a powerful book written by the Apostle Paul. If you are looking for more information about 2 Corinthians I would recommend this “Introduction to 2 Corinthians” (https://shorturl.at/xLRX9) or this Bible Project Video (https://bibleproject.com/explore/video/2-corinthians/).

When was the last time the only place you could go to for comfort was God? Was it that phone call you received? Was it that news from the doctor? Was it hurt from a family member or close friend?

How did God comfort you? Why did God comfort you? The comfort of God is a beautiful thing. It is something that you can’t really explain. You could argue that comfort from God is really a personal encounter with God. It is memorable. It is impactful. The first 11 verses of 2 Corinthians talk about God and the comfort that comes from Him.

1) ALL MERCY & COMFORT COME FROM GOD (3-4A)

This is who God is. It is a part of His character. He is the Father of all mercy. He is the God of all comfort. When you are in search for comfort, He should be your first stop not your last stop.

2) GOD COMFORTS US SO THAT WE CAN COMFORT OTHERS (4-7)

God comforts us for two reasons (1) to reveal more of Himself to us (2) so that we can show others who He is. This was modeled by Jesus. This was modeled by the Apostle Paul. One trap we have to avoid in the Christian Faith is the trap of consumerism. There is always a bigger purpose than “me” in what God does. Paul reminds us that we have unshakable hope and that we should comfort others with this truth.

3) ALLOW SUFFERING TO POINT YOU TO GOD (8-11)

When Paul uses the word “comfort” in this passage he is not speaking of western comforts He is speaking of comfort in suffering. We, too often, use “comfort” as an excuse to avoid suffering. But the Word of God says that it is through suffering that we (1) know the comfort of God (2) learn to be reliant on Him.

I love this verse from the Apostle Paul...

“Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us
rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead:
” 2 Corinthians 1:9-10

Look to God for comfort.
Let suffering drive you TO Him not AWAY from Him.
Comfort others with how you have been comforted.

I am excited! I know that God has so much in store for us in 2 Corinthians.
