Matthew 27:32-66

Today's Passage: Matthew 27:32-66

Where do we begin with this text? There is so much to unpack that we could take a long
journey through the joys and details of it. For brevity’s sake, let’s consider a few incredible truth
in this verse set.

1.  The level of mockery against Jesus in this passage is truly humbling because of how
much of it was true. Jesus did indeed save others (v.42), but the claim that Jesus COULD
not save himself should be replaced with the truth that Jesus WOULD not save himself.
Inability wasn’t the issue for Christ, it was obedience that kept him there. In fact, his
unwillingness to come down was the very avenue by which he did save us. He is the true
King of Israel (2 Samuel 7). God DID deliver Christ (from the grave), but not from the
cross. The very insults hurled at the Son of God were truer than they realized.

2.  The hope hidden in the tearing of the veil is a revelation of our access to God through
Jesus’ death. This temple veil concealed the living God and served as a barrier of
keeping humans from dying because of the intense holiness of God. Just as one man
was allowed behind the curtain one time per year (the high priest), one man’s death
(Jesus, the great high priest) tore down the veil and gave access to commune with this
holy God. What strikes me is the fact that the veil was torn from top to bottom;
signifying that God brought this down. From the top down, where men couldn’t reach,
God is giving full access to His presence through the finished work of Jesus. He now
welcomes all who trust in Christ to come to him, and according to Hebrews 4:16, to
draw near, receive mercy and find grace to help in our times of need.

While we certainly celebrate these truths during Easter, we should dwell on them today. Jesus
is our King. Jesus is our High Priest. Through Christ, we are saved from our sins and granted
access to the Father. This, my friends, is why we celebrate the gospel every single day!
