Matthew 24

Today's Passage: Matthew 24

As a student minister, I remember a student once telling me that God told him AND his grandmother when the end of the world was going to happen. I know, I know, the first thing you’re thinking is: “well, when did he say it would be?” I was so shocked by his statement and aware of the inaccuracy of it that I didn’t even ask him when it was revealed to them (major regret!).

I do know that he did not know. I do know that the return of Christ is guaranteed. I also do know that there that been bunch of debate around it for centuries and it still goes on today.
Matthew 24 is one of the primary biblical passages about Jesus’ return and what we can seemingly expect around the second coming of our King.

What Jesus makes clear regarding the end days is that we can expect:

  • The uprising of false teachers (v. 4-5, 10-11, 23-26)
  • Wars and rumors of wars (v. 6-7)
  • Natural disasters (v. 7)
  • Christian persecution and martyrdom (v. 9, 21)
  • Rampant wickedness (v. 12)
  • The visible return of Christ (v. 29-31)

This young teenager, as convinced as he was that he heard the voice of God, was mistaken. Jesus makes it clear in this chapter that the only person who knows of this time is God the Father, for not even the Son knows as of yet (v. 36).

I would exhort us all the following things as we consider this topic:

  • We should have a personal, but flexible, stance on End Times doctrine.
  • We should be aware of world events and political climates.
  • We should not fight over this topic, for apart from the eminent return of Christ (closed-handed theology), we do not know exact details of the open-handed parts of how and when He will come.
  • We should strive to be ready, spiritually, for Christ’s return.
  • We should evangelize as much as possible since we know this will take place.

Who can you pray for right now to know Christ and to help them get ready for whenever God finally does send Jesus for the second advent?
