Matthew 1

Today’s Passage: Matthew 1
There is a lot that could be unpacked from the genealogy of Jesus. This genealogy spans the entirety of scripture. Many of the names are familiar and some come off as unpronounceable, but every name demonstrates God’s faithfulness.
In the first verse, Christ is acknowledged as the son of David and the son of Abraham - a king of Israel and the father of Israel. Two of the highest regarded patriarchs of the faith.
If there was any mistaking that Jesus is descended from David and Abraham, Matthew lists out the entirety of Jesus’ genealogy in the verses to follow.
God was and is faithful in every detail. In this list we see fathers, redeemers, shepherds, and kings, but we also see liars, adulterers, and murderers. This list is filled with sinful people that God ultimately used for His Kingdom purpose.
The book of Matthew begins by establishing Jesus as the promised Messiah, the one who has come to save, through the line of David.
The book of Matthew ends by fulfilling the prophecy in Isaiah 7, that “‘Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel’ which means, God with us.’”
From Genesis until now, we have been on the edge of our seat knowing that God has promised redemption through one man, and now we see Him. He is the perfect King, Redeemer, and Shepherd. He is God with us.
