Isaiah 47

Today's Passage: Isaiah 47

You’ve heard the phrase “the last laugh,” right? It seems to have derived from a 16th century saying “He who laughs last laughs longest.” The meaning behind it comes down to finding victory over naysayers or getting the final advantage when it seemed like you would not. The 'last laugh’ typically assumes you didn’t get the first laugh; but that’s not the one that matters.

Babylon has been laughing at the kingdom of Judah. Their power and havoc they’ve wreaked on God’s people have no doubt given them the feeling of the first laugh. It appears they have won and there will be no turn around to the dire situation Judah’s kingdom faces.

BUT GOD…

Isaiah 47 is a clear indicator that God is not finished with His plan and purposes yet. While Babylon might be getting the first and current laugh, God will ensure that Israel will get the longest and last laugh.

There is a bit of divine mockery in this chapter, showing God’s vindication and justice that will be served to this mighty foe even as it seems as if there is no comeback possible for God’s people.

God promises their reign will not continue (v. 1,4,6-7,13, 15)
God promises consequences for their transgressions (v. 2-3, 5, 9-11, 15)

Evil has a way of seeming to win. It’s a pretty inescapable reality. It laughs hard at us. What we must remember about the faithfulness of God is that just because evil laughs now does not guarantee it will have the last laugh. Through God’s redemptive plan, Jesus will come as deliverer and Savior, putting evil into subjection to him and stripping death of its power.

Evil will not continue in its reign. It will come to an end through the final battle victory of Jesus Christ. Evil will be punished for its transgressions. God outlines in Revelation the outcome of evil and its destined peril. We need not despair its laugh.

Though now you may suffer to hear the first laugh because of sin, just know that through a relationship with Jesus, it will not have the last laugh; we will. Those who trust in Christ will come out victorious. Sit still in God’s victory. Let Him comfort you in your current affliction and secure you in the hope that is still to come. Go ahead and laugh; Jesus has overcome!
