Isaiah 46

Today's Passage: Isaiah 46
Isaiah’s prophecy describes the Babylonian procession of gods. They would move their gods from one city to another as a sign of honor for that city. Isaiah is mocking the Babylonian gods. They are less alive and powerful than the beasts that carry them from one town to the next. They are man-made and unable to move, let alone save/protect.
This Old Testament theme of idol worship seems ridiculous to us today. Who worships a wooden statue? But we do the same thing, it just looks different. The wooden idol has been replaced by an iPhone, a job, a status, or a picturesque life, and without Christ, we look to these things for joy, peace, and fulfillment not realizing they are worthless. They might be glamorous, but they are lifeless and unable to save.
God’s word shifts in verses 3-4 to remind us of what kind of God he is…”I made you, and I will care for you. I will carry you along and save you.” We worship the God of life - the one who spoke the world into being and holds all things together by the Word of his power (Heb 1:3). Unlike the world's gods, our God can save us because he reigns over ALL things because he created ALL things.
What about your heart? Have you been caught up in the worship of idols that our world parades around? Sometimes it’s more subtle than you realize. What controls your thoughts, your free time, your finances, your marriage? Does the world drive you or are you driven to honor and glorify God? The good news is that no matter where you’re at, God has given grace for you to turn to him again and follow him.
“For I am ready to set things right, not in the distant future, but right now!”
