Isaiah 44

Today's Passage: Isaiah 43
Israel had lost sight of the truth. They began worshipping things of this world, instead of the one who created it all. God calls out their idolatry (v. 9-18), “And the rest of it he makes into a god, his idol, and falls down to worship it. He prays to it and says, ‘Deliver me, for you are my god!’” (v. 17).
But thankfully, God is gracious. God reminds Israel of 3 things:
1. They are His chosen (v. 1-5) – God is a covenant keeper. He promised to make them a great nation, dating all the way back to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He was always going to fulfill His purpose for them.
2. God is the true God (v. 6-8) – There is nothing else worthy to worship. All religions do not lead to the same path. There is one God, who always has, is, and will be.
3. God is going to redeem them (v. 21-28) – God’s plan of redemption is going to come in a way many would not have expected. In verse 28, God declares that Cyrus (the Assyrian King) is going to fulfill His purpose of redemption to Israel. Cyrus is going to let Israel rebuild the Temple. Ezra 1:2-3 says: Thus says Cyrus king of Persia: The Lord, the God of Heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, and he has charged me to build him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Whoever is among you of all his people, may his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and rebuild the house of the Lord…” How cool is that!
Ultimately, for us, Jesus is the fulfillment of all of these. Jesus is the Son of God. Jesus has offered redemption. Those who find redemption are of His chosen. Jesus is worth following, and nothing compares to Him.
May we rest in these truths!
