Isaiah 33

Today's Passage: Isaiah 33

Assyria’s reign was no joke. A powerful tyrant nation who had not only the capability but the willingness to dominate any people who attempted to stand up against them. Even in the midst of such distress and national turmoil, Israel continues to declare their hope in a power much greater than Assyria.

I love the metaphorical thought hidden in this chapter. In verse 3, Isaiah captures the confidence he has in God’s strength over any enemy as he says: “…when you lift yourself up, nations are scattered.” It’s almost as if Isaiah is pointing out the rapid nature in which a school bully would flee when someone bigger and badder than him actually stood up to him. Though they may be quick to pick on others, they know when it’s their time to bow.

Assyria must flee at the presence of our mighty God! Like Israel, our heart cry should declare:

“Be our arm in the morning, our salvation in the time of trouble.” (v. 2)
“The Lord is exalted, for he dwells on high, he will fill Zion with justice and righteousness.” (v. 5)
“But there the LORD in majesty will be for us a place of broad rivers and streams” (v. 21)
“For the LORD is our judge; the LORD is our lawgiver; the LORD is our King, he will save us.” (v. 22)

Don’t fret the ‘powers’ that be; God is bigger. Don’t be anxious when threat arises; God will rise and be exalted (v. 7). Find hope, comfort, and peace in Israel’s God; our salvation, deliverance, and King.

How have you seen God be these things in your life recently?
