Isaiah 29

Today's Passage: Isaiah 29
13 And the Lord said:
“Because this people draw near with their mouth
and honor me with their lips,
while their hearts are far from me,
and their fear of me is a commandment taught by men,
22 Therefore thus says the Lord, who redeemed Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob:
“Jacob shall no more be ashamed,
no more shall his face grow pale.
23 For when he sees his children,
the work of my hands, in his midst,
they will sanctify my name;
they will sanctify the Holy One of Jacob
and will stand in awe of the God of Israel.
24 And those who go astray in spirit will come to understanding,
and those who murmur will accept instruction.”
Verse 13 and verses 22-24 stand in stark contrast with one another. Verse 13 paints the picture of the reality of the people’s worship, a reality that was still true in Jesus’s time when he quoted this verse in Matthew 15:8-9.
This should cause us to pause and reflect on if our external worship of God is a reflection of our inner worship of God, or if we are simply putting on an external show, void of true love for God and others.
Verses 22-24 paints the picture of the worship that God desires, deserves, and will ultimately bring about. Eventually, the people will stand in awe of God’s character and promises.
Do you stand in awe of God’s character and promises? I pray that you are growing in that today.
