Isaiah 16

Today's Passage: Isaiah 16

At this point in Isaiah, Isaiah is continually showing God’s power over the nations. Nation after nation is named and God has promised defeat for them. In our chapter today, Moab is the nation, as it is a continuation of chapter 15.

God has given Moab three years until destruction comes (v. 14). But what I love about this passage is the promise listed in verse 5. God is telling Moab about the Messianic Throne of David. And I think we see two things about the Messianic Throne of David:

1. It is full of divine integrity. Isaiah describes it being established in steadfast love. It’s an unwavering desire for someone’s best. It also talks about faithfulness, which is staying true and committed. Jesus is the one who will fulfill this. He is perfect in love and faithfulness. There is no corruption in the Messianic Throne of David.

2. It demands submission. The latter half of verse 5 describes the ruler as one who judges, seeks justice, and does righteousness. This is not a kingdom where you can choose your own way and live however you want. It is a kingdom built on the right things – the things that align with the character of God (love, righteousness, mercy, holiness, honor, etc.).

So while God is telling these nations about coming judgment, He is also telling them about available salvation. God has invited the nations to be in relationship with Himself. Look at Isaiah 25:6-8: On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine, of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined. 7 And he will swallow up on this mountain the covering that is cast over all peoples, the veil that is spread over all nations. 8He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the Lord has spoken.
