Isaiah 14

Today’s Passage: Isaiah 14
There is a theme throughout this prophetic chapter of Isaiah... PRIDE. We all know what pride is. It is the opposite of humility. It is self consumption. It is idolatry of the self.
In this chapter we see two clear examples of pride... Babylon & Lucifer.
Babylon was an evil country that captured Judah in 586 BC. They lived for themselves and no one else. And God here is prophesying through Isaiah that their time will come. Proverbs reminds us that pride goes before the fall. And ultimately what God says of them is that... “your pomp is brought down to Sheol...”
Pride is a liar. God reminds us in Galatians 6:7 that He is not mocked. That what we sow, we reap. He tells us in James 4 that God is against the proud. One of the quickest ways to draw near to God is through applied humility.
But there is another story at play here... the fall of Lucifer (Satan) from heaven.
“How you are fallen from heaven, O Day Star, son of Dawn! How you are cut down to the ground, you who laid the nations low! 13 You said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; above the stars of God I will set my throne on high; I will sit on the mount of assembly in the far reaches of the north; 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.’ 15 But you are brought down to Sheol, to the far reaches of the pit. // Isaiah 14:12-15
Lucifer was the top angel. He was a special creation of God. You can read about him in Ezekiel 28:12-15. But he was overtaken by pride. You can see his pride in the 5 statements described by Isaiah...
1) I will ascend to heaven
2) I will raise my throne above the stars of God 3) I will sit on the mount of the assembly
4) I will ascend above the heights of the clouds 5) I will make myself like the Most High
He wanted God’s place. And God said no. He hurled him to earth. And one day will achieve ultimate victory over him. Pride destroys. Humility builds.
Pride creeps into our hearts often unnoticed. It starts slow. It starts little. How do you see pride creeping into your heart? How can you submit it to Jesus today?
