Isaiah 12

Today's Passage: Isaiah 12
Sometimes there are those passages of scripture that jump off the page and serve as a much-needed breath of fresh air, especially considering the overall somber tone of the book of Isaiah. Chapter 12 is that reprieve as God’s character goes on display!
Even in the midst of God’s just anger toward Israel’s sin, a right depiction of His nature is declared.
“…for though you were angry with me, your anger turned away that you might comfort me.” (v. 1)
“God is my salvation…my strength and my song…my salvation.” (v. 2)
“With joy you will say: thank you LORD! You will make known his deeds and proclaim/exalt his name. He has done glorious things.” (v. 3-5)
And probably my favorite part of this verse set is found in verse 6: “shout, and sing for joy, O inhabitants of Zion, for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.”
There is so much to unpack in the back half of that verse:
No matter how you feel about God in this given moment, this is who He is. Keep your eyes fixed on his character and try not to only focus on what He does or does not do. For in the end, no matter how we perceive Him, God is great, personal, and Holy, and all the inhabitants of heaven will sing it for eternity!
How has God shown you His greatness? How has God been personal to you? How should His holiness affect our view of Him? Think about these questions for just a minute and, like Israel, “shout and sing for joy!”

There is so much to unpack in the back half of that verse:
• God is great. Not just in size, but in power and character. He reigns over all things and no one compares to Him.
• God is personal (in your midst). Speaking to the people, God reminds them they will sing of His presence and nearness to them. God is not distant and removed but close in proximity to this own people.
• God is Holy. He is perfect, above reproach, set apart in all things and His holiness demands our worship.
No matter how you feel about God in this given moment, this is who He is. Keep your eyes fixed on his character and try not to only focus on what He does or does not do.
