John 19:1-18

Today’s Passage: John 19:1-18
Today should be a time of reflection as we read. It should affect our hearts. It should overwhelm us. It is easy to gloss over passages like this. We hear this story all the time. But there is a reason for it. This story has the power to change the course of our lives. The story of the cross should bring us to our knees.
“21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” // 2 Corinthians 5:21
In thefirst part of John 19 we read about what the crucifixion entailed… tomorrow we read about the actual crucifixion. Before you read any further - pause for 3 minutes and ask God to be impacted by the crucifixion again… to hear it with fresh ears. Tell Jesus you are thankful for His willing sacrifice.
The cross was brutal. It had to be brutal because it is what our sin deserves. Jesus suffered for our sin. This should pierce our hearts like it did the people in Acts 2.
He wasflogged.
He was crowned with a crown of thorns.
He was mocked.
He was punched.
He was given a purple robe.
He was questioned.
He was given over by his own people shouting “crucify Him.”
He was given a cross to carry.
He was crucified with criminals in our place.
He suffered this for me and for you. Our sin, the things wefind enjoyment in outside of God, crucified Jesus. We would not have been standing up for Him. We would have been the ones executing. But He did this willingly.
John 19:10-11 really sticks out to me… So Pilate said to him, “You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you?” Jesus answered him, “You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin.”
Jesus was not a victim. He willingly laid down his life. Hebrews 12:2 tells us it was his joy. This should bring us to our knees in thankfulness. But we have often grown cold hearted - myself included.
Today, let’s repent from the cold heartedness toward the gospel. If this story was on the news it would move us to tears. It would capture the world. Why does it not capture our hearts?
Let this true story capture your heart today and lead you toward:
