John 15:1-17

Today's Passage: John 15:1-17

Are you a fan of synonyms? Do like love, enjoy, appreciate, and delight in similar words, vocabulary, semantics, and language? Jesus uses a word in John 15 that we tend to not fully comprehend so we use a similar word to make it more understandable.

Multiple times in this passage, Jesus tells his disciples to ‘abide.’ When’s the last time you’ve used THAT word in a sentence at work or with friends? What does it even mean? We replace it with synonyms like ‘rest’ or ‘remain’, but what is Jesus conveying when it tells us to abide in Him?

He’s saying: continue with me. The Christian life can be volatile and difficult in seasons, making it tempting to abandon ship when it seemingly starts to sink. We don’t often want to go into the wilderness, the fire, or through times of divine silence, but Jesus’ invitation is to continue with Him even when those times come.

What are some benefits to continuing (abiding) with Jesus? Let’s see what Jesus says:
•V. 2: we bear MORE fruit
•V. 3: we are clean
•V. 4-5: we stay connected to the vine
•V. 6: we persevere
•V. 7: God answers our prayers
•V. 8: we prove to be true disciples

Are you tempted to jump ship in tough times? Continue with Jesus. Are you attempting to produce the fruit of Christian life apart from Jesus? Continue with Him. Are you needing the reassurance of His love for you? Continue with Christ.

For a great worship supplement, check out this song entitled ‘Abide’ by Aaron Williams. Be encouraged as you rest, remain, wait, depend, lean on, and continue in Christ Jesus.
