John 14:15-31

Today's Passage: John 14:15-31

One of the unique aspects of the Christian faith compared to other religions is assurance. Am I truly saved, loved, and forgiven? It’s a profound question that gets to the very core of our hearts. Our passage today answers this question with another question, do you love Jesus?

True love and belief in Jesus produces three key fruits in a believer. The first is obedience. Those who love Jesus will obey his word. This is not a command to perfection, but one of surrender to God’s kingdom and lordship. Those who love Jesus recognize that their old way of life was full of death and shame - but the commands of God lead to life, freedom, and satisfaction.

Over and over in this passage, Jesus says that those who love him will obey him, so is your life marked by obedience and faith?

The second fruit of loving Jesus is his presence. There is a trinitarian focus to this point. Jesus tells us that the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are with those who love him.

If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.” John 14:23

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth” John 14:16-17

God hasn’t left us to figure out life on our own. He died and rose for us - and now he dwells within us and helps us! That means he fully knows the depths of your heart. Your sins, your shame, your past…and loves you still. Moreover, he promises to never leave or forsake you.

Take heart, if you love Jesus Christ, then he has made his home in your heart! He is with you, sanctifying you, interceding for you, and loving you.

Lastly, if you love Jesus, then you will see the fruit of peace. This is not earthly peace, but eternal peace. The kind that anchors your heart in hope and joy in the midst of suffering. The kind of peace that can rest in knowing you are fully known, loved, and saved by a gracious God who died in your place.

Is your life marked by this kind of peace?

Do you want the assurance that Jesus offers you? Ask yourself, do you love Jesus? If you love Jesus, he will make his home in your heart and his presence will produce a heart of obedience and peace. And when we fail we don’t have to doubt, but we can trust the Savior who lives within us…

But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” 1 John 2:1-2
