John 12:1-19

Today's Passage: John 12:1-19
As I read through this passage, something stuck out to me that I hadn’t necessarily paid attention to before, but now I can’t unsee it. So much emphasis (and rightfully so) has been put on Mary’s sacrificial giving to Jesus that her story takes center stage in the narrative.
Let me show you what the Spirit showed me, and it’s found in the first two verses!
“Six days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. So they gave a dinner for him there, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table.”
Did you see it? The man Jesus raised from the dead was at the table with the One who resurrected him! A few things about this description of Lazarus pops out at me:
I love Mary’s response to Jesus and I think it is right to strive to honor Him with our best. I also love the nonchalant detail of Lazarus living his new life in fellowship with Jesus, knowing that although he would die again, it wouldn’t remove him from union with his Savior.
Spend some time with Jesus today. Make the most of the new life we’ve been given in Him. Recline with him (literally or figuratively) and His word. Stay close to His side. Eagerly wait for the wedding feast at His second coming.
Not only do I pray God finds me as giving toward Jesus as Mary was, but also as giddy toward Jesus as Lazarus was.

1. Where else would we expect to find Lazarus that in close proximity to the One who raised him from the dead? By whom else would he want to sit? Lazarus knows what Christ has done for him and now cares about fellowship with Him as a priority in this new life he has been given.
2. Those raised with and by Christ will have our time at table with him too. Revelation 1:9 says, “Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” In Matthew 22, Jesus tells a parable about a King hosting a feast for anyone who would come. Those who responded to the invitation found a seat in the wedding hall (v. 1-14).
