John 10:22-42

Today's Passage: John 10:22-42

There was a man who lived 2000 years ago by the name Jesus. It is undeniable. History proves it. Other religions affirm it. Cultures have been shaped by it.

But where some historians and other religions get it wrong, they believe the man Jesus was just that: a man. Nothing significant. Just a morally good person who taught good life lessons. I always loved how C.S. Lewis put it (paraphrased): If Jesus really existed, He is either a liar, lunatic, or Lord. And nobody would consider a liar or lunatic a morally good person.

In our passage, the Jews believed Jesus was a liar and a lunatic. They asked Him a simple question, “Are you really the Christ?” To which Jesus answered, “I have told you so, but you do not believe.” His response caused them to want to stone Him. They didn’t see Jesus as a morally good person or the Christ, they saw Him as crazy.

What I love about this story is the contrast between the Jews and the people who followed John. The Jews rejected Jesus, while the followers of John believed in Jesus. The people of John heard what John had said, saw Jesus fulfill those things, and had receptive hearts to Jesus.

The people of John believed:
1.  Jesus to be the Christ (v. 30)
2.  Jesus to be their Shepherd (v. 27)
3.  Jesus to be their way to eternal life (v. 28-29)

There are so many people in our world who have a hindered view of Jesus. It happens for a variety of reasons: active rejection, pursuit of the world, past abuse, etc. As followers of Jesus, we should imitate Him but also help others see the correct Jesus – the one who is Lord.

Who do you believe Jesus to be? Who do the people around you believe Jesus to be? Is there someone you need to share Jesus with?
