John 8:48-58
Today's Passage: John 8:48-58
You’ve been around that person at a social gathering, right? The one who always tries to top your stories with their own and seems to HAVE to be the ultimate 1-upper? There is something about that level of arrogance that is extremely off-putting to many of us; mostly because the person who makes these claims isn’t as great as they make themselves out to be.
What if that person, though, was the greatest? What if nobody in the room could actually compare? How might it change things for us if that individual truly eclipsed everyone around them?
Jesus is that guy. The bold statement he makes in John 8:58 is not a brag, it is truth:
“Before Abraham was, I am!”
Though his biological birth age didn’t reflect it (as questioned by the Pharisees), Jesus is greater than Abraham because He existed before Abraham. John 1 tells us that Jesus is the Word who was with God the Father in the beginning. He has no beginning or end but is eternal.
This is why He promises that those who believe in Him will never taste death (v. 52). The only One sufficiently qualified to hand out eternal life is the One who Himself is eternal.
There is none like Jesus! No one can parallel Him in power or majesty. No ruler or authority lords over Him, but He reigns as the greater prophet because He has always existed and will always reign as the true Prophet, Priest, and King. Most importantly, to know this Jesus means to know the Father (v. 55).
Do you know Him? Are you in relationship with this eternal King who offers that anyone who believes in Him will never taste death but will have eternal life? Have you trusted in Christ and believed His gospel? If not, turn to Jesus right now! If so, worship Him as the greatest of all time.
