John 8:1-47

Today's Passage: John 8:1-47

John chapter 8 covers a lot of ground. Who Jesus is, where he came from, and the extent of his authority, but the most important takeaway from this chapter must be verses 31-38. Are YOU a true disciple?

We talk a lot about being disciples here at Center Point - and rightly so! We are called to make disciples - it’s our mission and command as a church, but what does being a disciple mean? According to this passage, disciples are those who believe that Jesus is the son of God AND those “who abide in His word.” It’s important that we understand that being a disciple includes both belief and obedience.

We must wholeheartedly accept and believe in Jesus' true identity. He is fully God and fully man, the illuminating light of the world who came to seek and save the lost. He willingly sacrificed Himself in our place, triumphing over death through His resurrection. True disciples firmly believe in the authority and lordship of Jesus.

Moreover, true disciples abide in His Word. To abide means to obey, follow, adhere to, and act in accordance with. In essence, disciples walk in the footsteps of Christ, following His teachings. However, abiding must flow from genuine belief. Anyone can appear virtuous or carry out righteous actions, but true disciples abide in Christ's words out of sincere faith. Obedience and actions alone do not save us; rather, they are evidence of a life rooted in faith.

So maybe the most important question you can ask yourself right now is, are YOU a true disciple of Jesus Christ? Maybe you believe in Jesus - you know He’s real and he died for you…but are you abiding in Him? Are your heart, life, thoughts, and actions aligned with His word?

We as a church want nothing more than to help you answer that question and follow after Him. The outcome is freedom—from the shackles of sin, guilt, and condemnation. Remember the words of Jesus, "So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed" (John 8:36). Our desire is to guide you towards true freedom in Christ.
