John 7:25-53

Today's Passage: John 7:25-53

In this passage we see several different reactions to Jesus and who He said He was. We see five reactions, specifically in verses 40 through 52 of this chapter. They are the following:

  1. The reaction of the convinced (verses 40-41a)
  2. The reaction of the contrary (verses 41b-42)
  3. The reaction of the hostile (verses 43-44)
  4. The reaction of the confused (verses 45-46)
  5. The reaction of the religious authorities (verses 47-52)

These reactions have characterized the patterns for reactions to Jesus throughout time. People cannot have two opinions about Jesus and who He is. The Gospel can make people uncomfortable because of this. Jesus said in Matthew 10:34-36, “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. And a person's enemies will be those of his own household.”

When sharing the Gospel with people, it can sometimes feel intimidating because you don’t know which one of these reactions they will have. It should bring us comfort that these are the reactions that even Jesus, the Son of God, got when speaking truth to these groups of people.

Jesus didn’t mess up. He never shared anything poorly, He was always completely theologically accurate, and still He didn’t see 100% of the people become His disciples and start following Him. Why do we think we will have a rate of success that high?

Only God can save people. Only God can soften hearts and lead people to Himself.

Who are you praying for the Lord to save? What is your next step with them?
