John 7:1-24

Today's Passage: John 7:1-24
The first thing we see in our text is skepticism and uncertainty (v. 1-13). At the beginning of our passage, Jesus’ brothers encourage Him to go to the Festival of Shelters (or Feast of Booths). Now, we don’t know their exact reasoning for Jesus going, but we can tell it is for secular gain. They talk twice about Jesus becoming famous by His works. Yet, we also see that none of Jesus’ brothers believe in Him (v. 5). His own brothers did not know who He was.
This leads into the skepticism and uncertainty of the crowd. Some thought Jesus was a good man, others thought He was causing chaos, and eventually, they would believe He was demon-possessed. No one quite understood Jesus yet.
Jesus stands up and begins teaching (v. 14). The crowd asks one of the most ironic questions of all, “How does he know so much when he hasn’t been trained?” I think it’s hilarious because they are asking this about the one who created and sustains everything.
Jesus points out two things in His teaching: (1) the Father has sent Him (v. 17-18), and (2) the people’s wickedness (v. 19). Jesus was showing them their need for a Savior – nobody had been able to keep the Law of Moses and the Father has sent the one they need.
Skepticism and uncertainty will hinder people from seeing Jesus for who He really is. Our world is full of people living with skepticism and uncertainty. Some are because of their own beliefs, but others because of pass abuse in a church, or even the “Christians” living around them.
The goal for us should be to speak truth into the uncertainty by sharing the Gospel, living in holiness, speaking well of others, and making countercultural decisions because of our faith. We need to be people who spread faith and not doubt.
