John 6:25-71

Today’s Passage: John 6:25-71
35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.
There’s a lot of text here to cover, so I’m going to just zoom in one aspect of this passage.
What does Jesus mean when he says that he is the bread of life?
One of the things this means is that Jesus is both sufficient and satisfying.
He is sufficient.
Jesus is enough. Following God’s design for your life will never leave you disappointed, at least ultimately. Sure, the pleasures of sin can be real, but they are fleeting. They always leave you wanting more. It’s like being extremely hungry and expecting Halloween candy to satisfy you.
He is satisfying.
Being satisfied in Jesus is not something that is reserved for really spiritual people or really mature Christians. Being satisfied in Jesus should be the goal of the Christian life. In many ways, growing in satisfaction is the way in which you grow as a Christian. Growing Christians are growing increasingly dissatisfied with sin and the pleasure of the flesh and the world.
Maybe you’ve heard this quote by C.S. Lewis:
“It would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.”
What areas of your life are you not fully satisfied with Jesus?
Money? Relationships? Kids? Work? ___________?
This is not to minimize the reality of sin and brokenness in your life. But this is to challenge you to answer the question: what are you doing and where are you going with your sin and brokenness?
Go to Jesus. He knows and he cares.
And he is sufficient and satisfying.
