Today's Passage: John 5:16-30
This altercation between the Jewish leaders and Jesus has a profound conclusion. The Jews are angry that Jesus is healing on the Sabbath, and they are more focused on the breaking of their traditions than a miracle from God. Jesus uses this opportunity to reveal to us who he really is - The Son of God.
John 5:19 says, “So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise.” Jesus starts by explaining his relationship with the Father. The Father not only shows Jesus what he is doing, but empowers Jesus to do the same things. He grants Jesus the power and authority to raise the dead, judge mankind, and give eternal life. There is really only one conclusion - Jesus is God.
What makes this passage so incredible is that he couples his power, authority, and divinity with a personal invitation to experience eternal life. "Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life” (John 5:24). He is offering salvation and eternal life to all who will accept him for who he truly is. Jesus’ invitation is open to all who will call upon his name (Rom 10:13).
This passage reminds us that our response to Jesus' invitation has significant consequences. It demands that we recognize that we are spiritually dead in our sin and that He alone possesses the power to bring us back to life. He is our salvation. Jesus offers us life beyond the grave, but he also invites us to experience a transformed life here and now. A life that has satisfaction and hope. This invitation requires only that we accept it through faith.
Are we living like we believe these words? If so, then our lives should look different. They ought to be full of worship and surrender, humility and gratitude. God himself took our sin upon his shoulders. Paid for it, then gave us life. Let that reality transform everything about you!
