John 3:1-21

Today's Passage: John 3:1-21

I know there are plenty of times in my life where I’ve blankly stared at someone who said something that just didn’t make sense to me. It’s almost like I can hear my eyelids close as I’m trying to comprehend whatever statement was just made.

Jesus makes one of those statements to Nicodemus in John 3. “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” **insert eyelid flutter sound** As most of us would (or have), a question of biology arises here and the wonder of how this event would occur is quite astonishing to consider.

Of course, Jesus was talking about more than physical birth and was referencing spiritual birth. He tells Nicodemus that true life, eternal life, is found in the second birth that the Holy Spirit conducts (v. 8), that Jesus alone gives (v. 14-15), and that the Father has graciously provided (v. 16).

Being born again means to believe in Jesus Christ (v. 15), and it comes with a promise; eternal life (v. 16). The hope of freedom from sin and abundant life in heaven. Here are a few things John wanted us to note:

1. Being born again is a marker of God’s love for us apart from our own merit. (v. 16)
2. God sent Christ to save people, not condemn them. (v. 17)
3. Those who do not believe upon Jesus, however, will face judgment. (v. 18)
4. Apart from Jesus we will continue to hide in the darkness. (v. 19-20)
5. Those who walk in the light do what is true (v. 21)

Have you been born again? Have you looked to and believed upon Jesus Christ alone, the Son of God, who loved you and gave himself for you? Do you feel the weight that apart from Jesus there IS condemnation (v. 18), but that there is NO condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1)?

If you’ve not yet turned your life over to Jesus, do it today! He offers you a new life. Turn to Jesus, believe upon Him, and have eternal life.
