John 2:13-25

Today's Passage: John 2:13-25
Jesus' cleansing of the temple often disrupts our thoughts about who Jesus was. We often picture him as loving and gracious, and rightly so! But in John 2 we see him show righteous anger. The temple was supposed to be a place of worship and devotion to the Lord. A place that was set apart and holy, instead they turned it into a place for personal gain and vanity. Seeing his Father’s house dishonored, and God’s word being disobeyed, Jesus responds by fiercely cleansing the temple from this corruption.
1 Corinthians 6:19 tells us, “that [our] body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within [us].” Just as Jesus showed zeal to cleanse the physical temple, he desires to cleanse us from sin and unrighteousness within our hearts. Are there parts of your heart that you are holding back from the Lord? Areas of unconfessed sin or misplaced priorities? Jesus wants you to surrender it to him and allow him to make you clean.
The temple was supposed to be a place of worship and devotion - and so are our hearts. Jesus says in verse 19, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” He died on the cross, was buried in the ground, and then three days later rose to life to give us the way to be TRULY clean. TRULY holy. TRULY forgiven. His death and resurrection have opened the curtains of the temple and allowed our hearts to become a place of worship and devotion to him.
John 4:23
[23] But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. (ESV)
Take a moment and examine your heart. Ask the Lord to show you areas where you are seeking personal gain rather than seeking God, and allow the Holy Spirit to cleanse you from anything that hinders you from being a true worshiper.
