John 2:1-12

Today's Passage: John 2:1-12
The book of John is the most unique of the Gospels. The purpose of the entire book is stated in John 20:30-31, “Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”
His purpose is clear: belief that Jesus is the Son of God, and that by believing you would come into a relationship with God through Jesus. With this goal in mind, instead of using the word “miracles”, John the apostle uses the word “signs”. He does this to emphasize that the miracles Jesus performed were not merely displays of power but had significance beyond the mere act themselves. He includes seven of these within this Gospel, and the miracle at the wedding is the first! This also marks the beginning of his earthly ministry.
Verse 11 says, “This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.” It is believed by many that this sign of Jesus is meant to at least partially fulfill the prophecy about the Messiah in Isaiah 25. Isaiah 25:6 says, “On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine, of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined.”
Only God can create out of nothing. Only God could have done this sign. Jesus, the second part of the God-head, made water change into the best wine that these people had ever tasted. It is a foreshadowing of the party we will get to be a part of when Jesus returns and makes all things new!
What stood out to you about this story that you had never noticed before? How does Jesus being God change everything?
