2 Samuel 16

Today's Passage: 2 Samuel 16

Loyalty is an expensive commodity these days. With so many businesses, brands, and choices made available to us, it seems increasingly more difficult to find true loyalty and devotion. With the overbearing (at times) influence of social media, public love and hatred for things has skyrocketed.

David finds both love and hate in 2 Samuel 16. He finds loyalty in a servant named Ziba who gave provisions to David and his men as they were starting to get weary from travel. In this instance, loyalty brought reward.

In the next few verses, the script flips completely and David finds himself far from the encouragement of loyalty and is thrown into the discouragement of hatred. Shimei cursed the king, threw rocks at the king, and flung dust at the king. In all this, David surrendered his own flesh as one of his officers requested this belligerent fool be put to death for his treason. Instead, David’s loyalty remained in his God. Though this persistent man continued to try and injure, David continued to trust.

Who are you loyal to? What things in life command your allegiance? Does God, first and foremost, have your complete loyalty? Do you rest in Him when others break your trust? Do you praise Him for the goodness and kindness on you that others may bring?

If there is One who deserves our complete devotion, allegiance, loyalty, and trust, it is none other than King Jesus. He is the faithful friend, our trustworthy King, and our sacrificial lamb. As others betray or attempt to injure, Jesus is constant in His commitment to us and is out for our good. In response to this, our loyalty should be found with Him.
