2 Samuel 9
Today's Passage: 2 Samuel 9
David’s kindness towards Mephibosheth is unprecedented. Most kings hunted and killed any remaining relatives of former kings. They did this to protect themselves and preserve their kingdom, but David takes it upon himself to honor and restore Mephibosheth.
David’s kindness was not without sacrifice. He gave Mephibosheth a significant portion of land, gave him servants, and then cleared a space for him to eat at his table. This action was worth the cost because it honored his friend, Jonathan, and it also resembled the very heart of God.
Think of the cost of our salvation. We were treasonous rebels against the kingdom of God. We stood condemned and hopeless, but God showed us unprecedented kindness. He found us, loved us, and paid a significant price to redeem us. Jesus would give his own life on the cross to make a way for us to eat at his table. What kind of King would do that for us?
What was Mephibosheth’s response to David’s kindness? “And he paid homage and said, “What is your servant, that you should show regard for a dead dog such as I?” He humbled himself before David and praised him. He thought he was going to be killed and instead, he received a blessing he didn’t deserve. We deserved Hell, but received eternal life instead…
How much more should humble ourselves before the Lord and give him praise?
Do you think you have a heart of gratitude?
What is another example of the Lord’s kindness towards you?
