2 Samuel 8

Today's Passage: 2 Samuel 8

Whenever something is repeated in a chapter of Scripture, you should pay special attention to it. In this relatively short chapter, twice it says, “And the LORD gave victory to David wherever he went.”

In my Bible, this chapter is titled, “David’s Victories”. However, with the repetition I mentioned earlier, along with looking at the book as a whole, a more accurate title would be, “Victories Given To David”. The majority of chapter 8 is outlining the rapid expansion of the kingdom under the hand of the Lord. Israel’s major enemies, with the Philistines coming first, were all defeated as David’s kingdom spread north, south, east, and west.

Verses 15-18 show David’s wisdom in delegation, and also show yet another way that David foreshadows King Jesus: “So David reigned over all Israel. And David administered justice and equity to all his people.”

Isaiah prophesies about this in Isaiah 9:7: “Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.”

In 2 Samuel 7, God made a covenant with David promising that the Messiah would come from his line and would rule over a kingdom forever. 2 Samuel 8 shows God’s continued blessing on David and his kingdom, but with God still as the ultimate hero.

How do you see God at work in the life of David so far that you’ve never seen before?
