2 Samuel 5

Today's Passage: 2 Samuel 5

Like a good season finale of your favorite show, this is a peak moment for the people of Israel! With much anticipation and hope, David is anointed King at 30 years of age. As David continues to conquer and have children, the future of God’s people seems bright.

“And David became greater and greater, for the LORD, the God of hosts, was with him.” (v. 10)

As the Bible has continued to point forward to One who is greater, we can celebrate today that Jesus Christ is the greater David, Lord, and King. In just a few chapters from now, God will make a covenant with David that from him will come the eternal ruler and kingdom. God’s promise is that one even greater than David himself would eventually come to save His people and rule with perfection and glory.

Question: is Jesus the King you’ve been looking for? Like Israel who thought it was Saul, we can fix our eyes on the wrong ruler. Even as profound of a leader and example as David was, He cannot measure up to the power and authority of Jesus.

“…that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” – Philippians 2:10-11.

Jesus really is the King we need! He has come to seek and save the lost, to redeem us from the curse of the law, to forgive our sin, to adopt us into the family, and to forever share His limitless riches with us as co-heirs.

If today you find yourself searching for another king, my friend, look to none other but Jesus. He conquered the Philistine giant called sin for us and stands in victory today as the unrivaled ruler of the world.

Take a minute and reflect on this question: does your life match this truth and reveal to those looking in that Jesus is indeed the King of your heart? Why or why not?
