1 Samuel 25

Today's Passage: 1 Samuel 25

When reading passages like 1 Samuel 25, it can sometimes be challenging to understand their significance when not read in context.

Zooming out, what we see in 1 Samuel 25 is the sovereignty of God positioning David to take steps to be the true king.

David was ill-treated by a foolish man named Nabal. In his anger, David rallies his (400) troops to inact vengance on this man. Nabal’s discerning (v. 3) wife Abigail wisely goes out to meet David and his men, and pleaded with them to reconsider their attack. David hears her pleas for mercy, and relents his attack. Nabal then died 10 days after this account.

What is the significance of this? “In his restraint about shedding the blood of fellow Israelites, David shows himself more qualified than Saul to be king.” (ESV Study Bible)

Godly wisdom looks like exercising self-control and considering the council and position of others. This is obviously a good leadership lesson for us, but more than anything, we should see God’s soveriegn hand in helping David to be shown as that type of leader, and helping develop him for God’s ultimate plan.

God’s sovereignty then, should translate to our trust in him. Is your trust in God rooted in the sovereignty of God?

Take trust in God is good and God is sovereign, all the time.
