1 Samuel 21

Today's Passage: 1 Samuel 21

There are so many fascinating and edifying details in this passage and there is too much depth to cover them all here, but I want to touch on a few.

1. David lies… This is a man after God’s own heart and a man with whom God makes the messianic covenant. David’s kingship is a type (Old Testament representation) of Christ and his kingdom, but like all types, it is merely a fallen shadow of the true substance.

David is anointed as king by Samuel, yet he is humbled and persecuted by the current king, Saul. This trial leads to temptation, to which David gives in. He lies to the priest. We are not too different from David in this regard. Often we respond to trials with sin, but we are given our true example in Christ Jesus. He faced the full weight of trials and temptation, yet remained perfect and sinless.

How should David’s failure and Christ’s success influence how we handle trials of our own?

2. David is given the sword of Goliath…Think about that. David is in the middle of running for his life despite being anointed as the king. He is in the process of lying and manipulating a priest of the Lord, and he receives the very sword he used to chop off the head of Goliath.

I wonder if David felt foolish or if he was comforted in receiving that sword. Probably both. The Lord was his strength when he faced Goliath and would be his strength against Saul. That didn’t take away David’s problems, in fact, he would be in hiding for years to come, but it was a reminder of the Lord’s presence and provision.

Think back over your life - in what ways did God strengthen/provide for you?
How might you use those to give you faith in future trials?
