1 Samuel 20

Today's Passage: 1 Samuel 20

This passage is a beautiful picture of friendship and a covenant between two faithful men. After truly determining that Jonathan was not on the side of his father, Saul, David and Jonathan form a covenant. Jonathan acknowledges that, as the Lord has said, David would be king over Israel. In those days it was normal for a new king to wipe out the family of the previous king. In verses 14 through 17, Jonathan asks David to spare his household.

David and Jonathan, in this covenant, agreed to care for one another. Jonathan agreed to care for David in the face of his father Saul, and David promised to care for Jonathan’s descendants, regardless of the path ahead. Jonathan kept his promise to David in the chapter we are reading today. David shows he keeps his promises also, long after Jonathan has died in a battle.

“And Mephibosheth the son of Jonathan, son of Saul, came to David and fell on his face and paid homage. And David said, ‘Mephibosheth!’ And he answered, ‘Behold, I am your servant.’ And David said to him, ‘Do not fear, for I will show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan, and I will restore to you all the land of Saul your father, and you shall eat at my table always.’”  2 Samuel 9:6-7

David is a foreshadowing of Christ as he keeps his promises and in showing abundant mercy and grace toward Mephibosheth, Jonathan’s crippled son.

Jesus is this kind of friend to us! How does this friendship story encourage you?
