1 Samuel 19

Today's Passage: 1 Samuel 19

When I was growing up, in middle and high school, I cared a lot about my possessions and what people thought about what I had. I remember in high school, I was going to Sprint store (shoutout Sprint) to get my phone fixed. While there, they told me about this new promotion they were having. It was called: IPHONE FOREVER. I paid so much a month and every year when the new iPhone came out, I was able to go get it. I couldn’t believe how great of a “deal” this was (I was wasting money because I was really just renting phones for about a year).

I loved the iPhone Forever deal at the time because it meant I got to have the newest and coolest. It wasn’t so much about the iPhone as it was about my status.

In 1 Samuel 19, Saul is jealous over his status. He is upset by the attention of David. He is so upset that he wants (v. 1) and tries to kill David (v. 9-24). We see a lot of similarities between chapters 18 and 19.

But I want you to notice Saul is not always jealous of David. Jonathan, Saul’s son, points out to Saul that David has been faithful to him (v. 4-6). Saul agrees to not kill David (v. 6). David comes back into the presence of Saul (v. 7). The shift to jealousy happens in verse 8. David wins a battle against the Philistines, which means all the attention is now back on David and not Saul. This is when Saul begins to seek to kill David again. Saul cared about his status, platform, and position.

As Christians, we need to be aware of jealousy in our lives. Jealousy is feeling pity for self. As believers, our lives are no longer our own. They belong to Jesus. We shouldn’t be concerned about our status, platform, and position. Instead, we seek to honor and glorify the King of King and Lord of Lords by how we think, treat, and talk to others.

A grateful heart is not a jealous heart.

What has God done for you? Is there jealousy in your heart to someone? Can you take time to encourage someone today?
