1 Samuel 14:1-15

Today's Passage: 1 Samuel 14:1-15

“Jonathan said to the young man who carried his armor, ‘Come, let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised. It may be that the Lord will work for us, for nothing can hinder the Lord from saving by many or by few.’” 1 Samuel 14:6

Many of the Israelites at this time probably would have agreed with this statement, including Saul had he been asked directly, but very few were willing to actually believe it enough to do something. Jonathan trusted the Lord, unlike his father, who sat with the priest under a pomegranate tree. It is interesting that the Bible tells us the priest was Ichabod’s nephew. It may be pointing again to the fact that Saul would soon have his kingship taken away, as the name Ichabod means “the glory has departed”.

Jonathan was familiar with the Scriptures. He may have remembered Leviticus 26:8, “Five of you shall chase a hundred, and a hundred of you shall chase ten thousand, and your enemies shall fall before you by the sword.”

Even though from an earthly perspective, the Israelites were greatly outmatched, Jonathan completely believed that the Lord would keep His promises to Israel! He went with just his armor bearer to see what God would do with two men who stepped out in faith. He wasn’t saying, “I can win a great victory with God’s help.”, he was saying, “God can win this even through me.”

Through Jonathan and his armor bearer, the Lord saved Israel from the Philistines.

God is calling each of us to walk boldly with Him in faith. What is God calling you to do for Him?
