1 Samuel 13

Today's Passage: 1 Samuel 13

Sometimes what we think may be the right thing to do is actually the wrong thing to do. Saul fails in our chapter today by doing an unlawful sacrifice. Saul’s intentions were not evil, he was simply trying to unite the people. Saul messed up because he did not follow what God had commanded.

God laid out specific instructions for the Israelite Kings. In Deuteronomy 17:18 it says, “And
when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, he shall write for himself in a book a copy of this law, approved by the Levitical priests.”
Saul was to write down all of the Law – the first 5 books of the Old Testament. The reason is so that the King would know the Law and not depart from it.

Saul’s unlawful sacrifice happens because he ignored the Law. He, as the King, did what only the priest was supposed to do in performing sacrifices. And because of this, God rejected Saul and confirmed his kingdom would not continue (v. 13-14).

A few questions I want to ask:

1. How well do you know God’s Word? If we fail to know it then we will never keep it.

2. Are there things you specifically ignore in God’s Word? Is there anything you wrestle with in
the Bible and choice to ignore rather than actually follow? Why is that dangerous?

3. When making a choice, how can you ensure that what you are doing is the godly choice?
