1 Samuel 8

Today' s Passage: 1 Samuel 8

Who is the king of your life? That’s the big question in this passage that all of us must answer. Who is calling the shots and to whom are we swearing allegiance? The answer to that question determines the direction of your entire life, and if you don’t answer that question, the world will answer it for you. Let’s learn from the Israelites' example.

The Israelites give their reason for wanting a king…and it’s not a very good one, but at least they are honest - “that we also may be like all the nations.” They wanted to blend in and resemble the “success” of the world around them. That’s not too far from the struggle that Christians face today.

The world demands that we bow our knee to its values, ethics, and gods, but God’s people are called to flee from the world and live life God’s way. Surrendering to His Lordship over our lives.

James 4:4 “You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God”

1 John 2:15 “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”

So who is the king of your life? Does your life show that Jesus is your king? Jesus has conquered the grave to give us life and salvation, and our lives should reflect that truth!

Revelation 19:13,16 “He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. . . . On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.”

What does a king do? How does that impact your view of your relationship with God?

Do you think your life looks different from the world?
