1 Samuel 7

Today's Passage: 1 Samuel 7

In our Kids Ministry and with parents here at Center Point, we have started implementing some family discipleship terms that we want everyone to know the definition for and how to incorporate them into their own family worship times at home. The terms are the following: modeling, time, moments, and milestones.

When describing milestones, I often use this example of an Ebenezer! In this chapter, Israel is experiencing a revival under Samuel’s leadership. They are repenting of their sin and turning back to worshiping the one true God. While this was happening, the Philistines, the enemy of Israel, heard that the people were gathered and decided to attack them. The people of Israel were terrified, but they turned to the Lord for help!

The Lord gives them a decisive victory over the Philistines, and it marked the beginning of a time without the Philistines invading again. The Isarelites took back some of the cities the Philistines had taken, and it was all because the Lord delivered them into their hands. Samuel then set up an Ebenezer, a stone of remembrance, so that anytime they saw it they would remember what God did for them on that day.

This is how I talk to parents about milestones in the life of their child! It’s making and marking the monumental moments in a child’s life with the purpose of remembering the faithfulness of God. For example, some families on the 13th birthday of their child, instead of a normal birthday party, will invite the mentors and teachers that have impacted that child’s life and have them go around sharing about how they have seen the Lord grow that child, what they are praying the Lord will do, etc. Those kids that get to experience that will remember it forever!

How do you commemorate things that God has done for you so that you can be reminded of them?
