1 Samuel 5-6

Today's Passage: 1 Samuel 5-6

In 1 Samuel 4, Israel makes a terrible mistake in bringing the Ark into battle. Ultimately, Israel was not following God, but the council of wicked men. They lose the battle, but more importantly, the Ark was taken from them.

We pick up in 1 Samuel 5 with the Philistines putting the Ark before the statue of their god: Dagon. Dagon didn’t last long. The first morning he is found lying before the Ark, and the second morning, the statue had its head and arms cut off and lying before the Ark. God was trying to get a point across: There is only one God, and His name is Yahweh.

What happens in 1 Samuel 5-6 should point us back to Exodus and the 10 plagues. In Exodus, each plague is against a god that the Egyptians worshipped. God was using the plagues to show His power over these so-called “gods”. Even the Philistines pointed back to Egypt and what God did there in 1 Samuel 6:6.

This passage should remind us of who God is and His faithfulness in the past, but it should also cause us to look forward. There is coming a day when everyone will know there is only one God. Some will be reward by being with God in eternity, while others will be too late because they failed to recognize this truth when they had a choice.

How has God been faithful to you in the past? How do you feel knowing there is a reward awaiting for those in Christ Jesus?
