1 Samuel 2:12-36

Today's Passage: 1 Samuel 2:12-36

I remember taking the written drivers permit test and having to memorize the road signs so that I could know their meaning. Those road signs have specific purposes; to inform speed limits or to warn of upcoming danger, etc. Isn’t it funny though, that as we get more acclimated to driving, we become less and less aware of those road signs that once meant so much to our knowledge?

In 1 Samuel 2, the sons of Eli have an abundance of road signs to direct them away from the evil direction in which they were headed. Unfortunately, they chose not to listen.

Scripture says they were ‘worthless men.’ (v. 12)
Scripture says their sin was “very great in the sight of the Lord.” (v. 17)
Scripture says Eli told them “I hear of your evil dealings from all these people. (v. 23)

As a result, God informed Eli that his priestly line would come to an end and that his male heritage would die by the sword (v. 31-34). Sin is that big of a deal. God has given us His Word, His Spirit, and His Church as road signs that warn of the destruction around the curve of an unrepentant life.

The question is, do we see the signs anymore? Are our eyes open to notice the warnings posted all around us and inside of us? Do we still feel conviction? Does our sin cause us to grieve?

Praise God that in Jesus, the priestly line continued and found its fulfillment. That in Him we find forgiveness and grace (1 John 1:9). If we have done wrong, we must be marked by repentance. May we run TO the gospel and receive mercy there. Yet, may our eyes be open to see that the only place our sin will take us is to the place of destruction. Eyes up, hands at 10 and 2, and stay alert!
