Acts 2:1-13

Today's Passage: Acts 2:1-13

Reversing Babel

If you remember the story in Genesis 11, mankind was attempting to compete with God by constructing a tower. In response, God took the one common human language and confused it by incorporating multiple languages, making it increasingly more difficult for them to communicate with each other.

Fast forward to this scene in Acts 2 where God’s desire to see humankind come to saving faith in Him caused Him to reverse what He did in Babel.

At Babel, God took one language and made it many.
At Pentecost, God took many languages and made it one.

At Babel, mankind wanted to compete with God.
At Pentecost, mankind wanted to be used by God.

When you consider the magnitude of this moment and that the purpose of God doing this was to make the gospel known amongst all people groups and nationalities at the time, it truly is a remarkable moment in church history. Just look at the list of the nations and tribes represented in verses 9-11 who for the first time (by the Holy Spirit’s power) able to communicate with each other. What an incredible God and what an important message.

“We hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” (v 11)

Thank you God, for reversing the curse of Babel that your people might make your great glory and gospel known! Thank you God, that although language barriers still exist, we have the same Holy Spirit and the same good news to proclaim in hope that whoever believes on Jesus Christ will be saved.

Send us out, Lord. Send us out with the same intention: to tell of Your mighty works accomplished through you Son, Jesus Christ!

Thanks Drew! That's good; I've never thought of this as 'Reversing Babel' before. I like that analogy.

And with the revival currently happening in Wilmore, I'm reminded of the first revival here. Believers getting together and the Holy Spirit showing up and doing what only the Holy Spirit can do, but in a concentrated time and space. Great picture of God's power on display!
