Exodus 36

Today's Passage: Exodus 36

It seems like every marriage has either bonded or struggled over this one sensitive topic:
curtains. What color do we want? What length? What purpose do they serve? Curtains can
certainly be a centerpiece of a house or they can be piece of contention, depending on
perspective. You may be the kind who loves to hang them in every room or the kind of person
who would like them torn down. The good news is: BOTH ARE BIBLICAL! (so stop fighting over
silly curtains!)

We see in Exodus 36 that God had a specific way He wanted the temple to look. One of the
main features of the temple being built were the ornate and expensive curtains that would be
clearly visible. Heavy, beautifully covered pieces of fabric that were crafted by skilled workers
that God raised up for this very purpose. God wanted them hung up!

Fast forward to Jesus’ death and we see a temple curtain come into play again, specifically the
one that kept the manifest presence of God from the rest of the temple because of the holy
nature of God Himself. Only one man, and only one time per year, would enter in to make
atonement for sin on behalf of the people by shedding blood. There was a reason God wanted
that curtain hung up; to keep His holiness inside and our filth outside.

As Jesus finished His work by dying on the cross, that same curtain that stood between sinful
man and a holy God was literally ripped in two from top to bottom as God Himself tore it down.
This indicates that Jesus has now become high priest whose death has once and for all opened
the door for us to be in the presence of God through what He has accomplished on our behalf.

For a while, our guilt was the reason God wanted the curtain up. Now that Jesus has paid the
price for sin and made a way for us to be innocent, God wanted the curtain down. This means
that through Jesus we have access to God (see Romans 5:1-2). No more need for elaborate
curtains to stand in the way as a barrier; Jesus’ death and resurrection has given us the privilege
to enjoy the presence of God once again!

Whether you want curtains up or curtains down in your own house is a matter of preference,
but Jesus has taken them down spiritually that we might be able to once again commune with
God. Enjoy the restored relationship with the Father through Jesus as the curtain has come
down in order that we might be able to go in.
