Exodus 33

Today's Passage: Exodus 33

As we begin in Exodus 33, the Lord is angry with the people of Israel because of the golden calf incident. They were worshipping a false god. God says He would not go up with the people to the Promised Land because if He did, He would consume them. It is a reminder that sin cannot be in the presence of God.

But as we get to verses 12-16, Moses makes intercession for the Israelites. What Moses said is so important. In summary, Moses says, “God, if you are not going with us, I do not want to go. You are what make us distinct from every other nation.” Because of this, God does go with the people and not consume them on the way.

Honestly, Moses’ plea should be our plea. If God is not in it then we shouldn’t want it. If God is not leading us there, then we shouldn’t go. But if the Lord leads, then we follow. If the Lord is calling us to do something, then we do it. It sounds simple but can be difficult to do.

How often do we miss out on what God could do in and through our lives because we haven’t stepped when the Lord told us to step? I know personally I have missed out on gospel conversations, discipleship relationships, mission trips, etc. because I was focused on my agenda and not God’s.

I heard this quote from a pastor one time, “Lord, may you go before us, and your glory follow behind us.” Let that be the cry of your heart today.
