Exodus 29

Today's Passage: Exodus 29
What a messy scene in Exodus 29 as God describes how the Levitical priesthood is to come into service! It’s a lot of blood, guts, and fire. What is interesting to point out is the foreshadowing of Jesus in this method of consecration. What was once a service of mankind is eventually fulfilled in the death of the God-man, Christ Jesus. Look at how these events are similar:
Unblemished animals.
Anointing with oil.
The shedding of blood.
Burning the flesh outside of the camp.
The giving of holy garments.
An offering of peace.
Jesus is the unstained lamb (John 1:29). He was anointed with oil before his death (John 11:2). His blood was shed at Calvary for our sin (Colossians 1:20). His body was broken at Golgotha just outside the camp of Jerusalem (John 19:17-18). Christ’s righteousness has been given to us as holy clothing (2 Corinthians 5:21). Jesus has now made peace with God for us through His death (Romans 5:1).
The entire Old Testament sacrificial system was a temporary holding pattern until Jesus took on flesh and became the greater fulfillment. His service as both priest AND sacrifice is a beautiful picture of what He accomplished for us.
Perhaps the greatest accomplishment is foreshadowed in Exodus 29:45-46: “I will dwell among the people of Israel and will be their God. And they shall know that I am the LORD their God, who brought them out of the land of Egypt that I might dwell among them. I am the LORD their God.”
Jesus has secured this communion for us through his death and resurrection, We can, through repentance and faith, now say that God is our God and He is with us. Praise God for this messy scene in Exodus, for the messy scene of Calvary, and for the beautiful picture of the gospel where we see Jesus as the better sacrifice.
