Exodus 19

Today's Passage: Exodus 19

The scene of Exodus 19 is intense… thick dark cloud, trumpets sound coming from the sky, thunder and lightning, a mountain that if touched then you die, and God speaking in the thunder (v. 19). And while I read this, I could not help but to think how amazing this must have been. A few thoughts:

1. God is to be feared.

In church, we talk about fearing God in the aspect of awe or reverence. I think that is true and good. But I also, think we need to fear God. We need a healthy fear of God. In this moment in Exodus 19, I bet there were some who were afraid. And I think that’s ok. We are finite beings. God is a holy and transcendent God who we should have a healthy fear of. I’m not saying we live cowering before God, but we should understand His power and the fact He is in control of all things.

2. God is holy.

We see in this passage the people of Israel consecrating (be made clean) themselves. They needed to understand unclean things cannot be in the presence of a holy God. Christ is who consecrates us. He makes us clean when we come into a relationship with Him. I’m thankful we don’t have to try and clean up our lives before coming to God.

3. God is gracious.

The people of Israel got to have this amazing (little frightening) encounter with God! Nobody else got to experience this. No other “gods” were doing thing this. And the whole reason why God did this was so people might believe forever (v. 9). God had revealed Himself to those who had not deserved it. He did the same thing for us through His Son.
