Exodus 14

Today's Passage: Exodus 14

Why would God harden the hearts of Pharaoh and his servants to pursue his people? It seems counterproductive to his plan of rescuing the Israelites to pin them against the Red Sea and then send an army to attack them. We can feel the same way in difficult circumstances. If God has a plan for my life, then why would he put me in this trial? It is easy to feel that way from our point of view, but we must realize that God is working in ways we can’t see or imagine.

Exodus 14 gives us a behind-the-scenes vantage point. God says to Moses, “And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and he will pursue them, and I will get glory over Pharaoh and all his host, and the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD.” God is using this terrible circumstance to showcase to Israel and the surrounding nations that he is the one, true God. He is the Lord of all creation, and he is their savior.

What about today in your life? He was working behind the scenes for the Israelites, but is He doing that for us? Absolutely! As Jesus gives us the Great Commission he says, “And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” That promise does not go away when times get tough. As we follow the Lord and obey his Spirit we can trust that he is working for our good and His glory!

So how can you apply Exodus 14 to your life now?

1. Confidently follow the Lord. God told Moses to camp at the edge of the Red Sea and wait for the army, and that’s exactly what he did. God has given us His Word and His Spirit to guide us, so give careful attention to following the Lord, even when it is difficult.

2. Cling to his promises. Hebrews 13:5 tells us that God will never leave or forsake us. So when the enemy surrounds us, cling to God’s promise and his presence. Cling to the gospel. That even in death - Jesus has secured your rescue from sin and purchased your eternity.
